Ideas for Summer Sensory Play

Coming up with fun things to do with kids in the summer does not have to be hard or expensive. There are so many fun activities for kids that will get them moving and learning. From the youngest to those who have ‘outgrown’ kid things, everyone has fun in the water during the hot days of summer. Here are a few activities that will help your child learn and have fun!

Giant Sensory Bag – I recently ran across this Pinterest post that really made my day. A creative mom used plastic sheeting and duct tape to create a giant sensory bag for her kids. She doubled over the plastic and taped it securely and then filled it with water. She made two bags and taped them together to form one huge ten foot by twenty foot play area in her back yard. Her children had a blast cooling off on the giant bag and slipping and sliding across it once the inevitable leaks appeared. Not only did the bag last all day, but the kids were excited and happy to play with it from sun up to sundown. Sounds like a winner to me! Sprinkler Fun – Even the smallest toddler loves to play in the sprinkler on a hot day. For little kids you can create a tiny splash of water and give them various tools to play with it. Things like colanders, spoons, and buckets will keep them entertained for hours. For older kids you can create a water obstacle course with a slip and slide, various ‘fountains’ and even a splash pool. If the sprinkler creates a bit of mud, so much the better! Mud pies, mud fights and more are easy to clean up with just a hose and they give kids the chance to get a little dirty.

Water Balloons – For older kids water balloons make great ammo. They can have all-out battles with no one getting hurt. For younger ones you can help them play catch with the wobbly balls and teach the importance of being gentle so not to break it. You can also do experiments like how far you can drop the balloon without it breaking. Splash bowling is another fun game Just stack up some empty cans in a triangle shape and have the kids toss the balloons at them. You get a splash and a crash, which will have the kids setting it up over and over again.

These are just a few ideas for fun summer sensory activities. Water is a great way to get kids learning and playing safely. So this summer why not get outside and have some wet fun!
